Medical deviceWhat is COLD FORMING? Cold forming or cold heading is a manufacturing process for making precision metal parts. That is, room temperature metal is formed or re-shaped under high pressure, pushed past its elastic limit until you achieve a desired new part shape. For more information about the advantages of cold forming see our article in the August 2003 issue of Machine Design Magazine "Banging out tiny parts". The Deringer-Ney's Marshall Facility has been manufacturing quality cold formed parts for over 30 years.

Miniature hearing aid screwsOur specialty at DNI Marshall is MICROmfg. Medical components and instruments are getting ever smaller. We have evolved to meet the demands of the Medical Industry, supplying miniature screws, tiny contact pins, platinum rivets, power pins, implant components, tiny fasteners, discs, miniature medical fasteners, and many other custom precious metal parts. We can form a diameter as small as 1/64 inch. We are accustomed to working with a wide variety of metals, from copper alloys to platinum alloys. Whether your product requirement is current carrying, weld ability, non-reactive, or biocompatibility, we can help you develop your part. Are you concerned about corrosion, oxidation, and cadmium-free, lead-free, or nickel-free materials? Our metallurgists can even formulate an alloy to meet your needs.

Precision cold formed nickel contact pinsDo you have an expensive screw machined part? We can help you! Many materials can be easily cold formed, but are not so easily screw machined. For example, NICKEL, KOVAR, and some STAINLESS STEELS are tough ductile materials that we cold form every day, but they are very difficult to screw machine. Conversely, TITANIUM alloys are screw machined in our Screw Machining Facility, but do not exhibit properties for cold forming.

Gold plated nickel contact pins Cold forming is economical! We cold form parts at a high production rate compared to screw machining because there is no metal removal involved giving you low cost metal parts. There is no cutting away of scrap material for expensive recycling. Parts are formed net shape often with a high luster finish. Depending on the material, you may actually see improved part strength due to cold work added during the process. We convert many parts from screw machine to cold forming. Our customers may realize cost savings, or meet new ROHS requirements with our lead-free materials, or gain market share by employing a better performing material.

Good for Cold Forming, Poor for screw machining Talk to us about your application today! We want to be involved early in your product development timeline because we have the resources within Deringer-Ney Inc to help you. We are vertically integrated with four DNI Manufacturing Locations.
